What is a movie diary in Filmsomniac?

Since you're reading this, I assume you already know what a movie diary is. The more interesting question is how a movie diary works in Filmsomniac. In Filmsomniac, you don't have to specifically start the movie diary. Just mark the latest movie you saw as watched, and you have started your movie diary. Your user profile's home page is your movie diary. Although this page talks about movie diaries, Filmsomniac works just as well for TV shows and episodes.

Your movie diary has two dimensions

The movie diary in Filmsomniac has two dimensions, the past and the future. Or today, if you want. Future is easy. Just mark movies as watched as you watch them. The past may be harder. Most of us haven't written down or kept track of what we have watched earlier. We remember some films. We forget others. That's why, Filmsomniac has a Discover section that contains the most current and popular movies as well the all-time greats. Discover also contains a list of current TV shows, actors and actresses.

To aid your memory in another way and find movies you have watched, Filmsomniac has a demo acccount page. It contains real movie watches starting from 1997. It is my profile, my movie diary. It contains over 1200 movie and over 2000 episode watches. It is at the same time a sneak peak inside Filmsomniac, and a way to refresh your memories.

Use it as much or as little as you want

Filmsomniac lets you go as deep as you want with your movie diary. Use as much or as little of it as you want. It's completely up to you. The diary for you can be just the movies you've watched. No actual watch dates, no notes, no ratings. Just a list of watched movies. The thing for you is only that you remember you've watched them. You don't watch a movie more than once. If this is you, it's ok, we got you covered.

Filmsomniac also handles the other end: you often rewatch films and like to keep track of all of those watches. You know the exact dates you watched them. You remember that for the first time you watched the film as a kid. Then, that same movie was the first DVD you ever bought. Now you watch it from Netflix every year.

Of course, for most people, a movie diary is a combination of all these, and everything in between. You probably didn't write down the exact date you watched your first movie. You probably couldn't even write yet back then. And for some movies, you just remember the year you saw them. But that's ok. Filmsomniac still has you covered.

Why keep a movie diary?

Some people, like me, like to keep the tickets of the movies I saw in a theater. Now they are mostly digital, so I can't do that anymore. The first movie with an actual watch date on my movie diary is from September 1997. And I remember the date, because I saved the ticket and later added that watch to my movie diary in Filmsomniac. But this diary entry also helps me remember, that it was watched in September, because my friend's birthday is in September. There were three of us and we used to go to movies for birthdays. The tickets were of course bought to the hero of the day by us other two.

My movie diary in Filmsomniac also helps me remember that in the last week of June, 2001, I saw the movie "Meet the Parents" in an outdoor movie theater in Athens. And that brings to my mind that it was also a week before my army service started.

Often, it is easier to remember events of your life through small specific details. That's why I like to have a movie diary. The diary entries help me remember, what happened. Remembering when I saw the first movie in a theater brings to my mind the people who were with me then. And that brings a lot more memories to my mind from that time.

In addition to remembering what you have watched, a movie diary is an anchoring point to your memories.

Most people don't know the exact date they watched their first movie. Most people don't remember every movie they've ever seen.

That's fine.

Start with what you remember and fill in the rest later.
